Tuning in to the unit
Our first UOI for the year is under the transdisciplinary theme, How we organise ourselves. We aim to achieve the understanding of the big idea, "Food people eat goes through several steps from the farm to our table."
This week, we unpacked the transdisciplinary theme, HOW WE ORGANISE OURSELVES. We looked at the meaning of ORGANISED and brainstormed examples of how this is evidenced in our surroundings. Expected answers came up such as 'having rules', 'following a schedule', 'lining up', and others. However, unexpected but interesting answers also came up like 'tying the hair', 'cleaning my toes', which when looked closely on, do reflect being organised in a different level. Hearing their answers show how rich their young minds are.
Then Grade 1s put their thinking skills into action when they worked in teams to identify the sources of food we prepare on our table. They cut and glued pictures of foods and connected them to the sources provided (animals and plants).
After this, we went to the next level where the Grade 1s were asked to identify the possible steps that food undergoes from the source to the final product. Most of the groups chose cow as a source and milk or ice cream as a final product.
Next week, we will move forward by gathering their questions and wonderings and design the next learning engagements based on them.
