Gardening on a Friday
On Friday morning, Grade 1s together with Pre School and Grade 2s worked on the garden by taking off weeds, pulling them out from the soil so they won't take the nutrients away from the plants. They also added some coal to the soil near the plants. It is really a good experiecne to get connected with nature through simple activities like this.
A big thanks to Ms. Midori for organising this event and allowing children to be involved. :)
Iniesta Soccer Training at DSKI
Last Thursday, the school got the chance to be visited by the Iniesta Soccer Academy staff and trained by expert soccer players. Grade 1s went to the green field and there, they were taught basic skills in handling the ball, and basic defense strategies too. It was an hour of full active training which was concluded by an actual game between girls and boys. The game was tight as both teams were keen on getting a goal. The score was a 1-1, both teams victorious and proud of scoring a goal.
Unit 3 - Who we are
This week, Grade 1s started exploring the new unit under the transdisicplinary theme, Who we are.
We began by checking how much do they know and understand about the journey of food in our body. They traced their classmate's body frame and use that as a template to show how the food goes into our body and the process it undergoes inside and how it is used and utilised as well as how it is excreted at the end.
They also looked at some picture prompts showing poor health choices and wrote their own opinion about each picture prompt.

Wrapping Up the Unit
This week Grade 1s wrapped up the unit by doing some reflections and sharing their perspectives.
They chose one daily life activity (e.g. eating, playing games, shopping, and others) and showed how this has changed over the years from as early as the ancient past up to the present. Aside from that, they also explained the possible reasons for change. Why, How and What changed.
In partners, they tried to forecast how these activities will look like in the future. They showed amazing thinking through their illustrations. They also explained what made them come up with such possibility in the future.
We will set this unit to rest as we work on our unit reflection next week, and continue the journey exploring the next unit under the theme Who We Are.

Sorting Out, Going Further and Making Connections
This week, Grade 1s worked on sorting out the data and information they gathered and make connections with how they live their lives at present.
Our point of reflection focused on the concept of CHANGE: We looked into the changes from past and compared them to present. We also brought in our perspective on reasons why things changed.
The unit is almost ending. The children are busy planning and dropping their ideas on how we can share our unit learning to the school community.

Exploring Clothes, Toys and Dance from Past to Present
This week, Grade 1s explored the toys, clothes and dance from the past and compared them to present. They also looked into the changes that happened and thought of the posisble reasons why changes occured.
We read the story of Charlie Needs a cloak and looked at the laborious ways of how new clothes were made in the old days. Then we tried doing basic stitching usng needles and thread to give them a feel of how making clothes is done manually.
Then we looked at the different toys that parents played with when they were still children. The toys included rocking horse, toy cars and soldiers, stuffed bears, spinning tops, etc. Grade 1s found similarities between the toys and games played then and now. We went further by checking how then the toys before are different from today. The following discoveries came out: materials used, designs, how they are made and safety. Toys before were mostly made of wood and metals. Now most toys are made of plastic. Toys before have basic designs and colours. Toys now have more interesting designs and vibrant colours. Toys before were not as safe as the toys now because the toys now undergo a stricter process of safety check.
After that, we looked at dance and music and how they have changed overtime from 1950s to present. The students worked in pairs and chose a song for their dance. They are going to come up with steps and showcase this during our school assembly.
