Exploring Clothes, Toys and Dance from Past to Present
This week, Grade 1s explored the toys, clothes and dance from the past and compared them to present. They also looked into the changes that happened and thought of the posisble reasons why changes occured.
We read the story of Charlie Needs a cloak and looked at the laborious ways of how new clothes were made in the old days. Then we tried doing basic stitching usng needles and thread to give them a feel of how making clothes is done manually.
Then we looked at the different toys that parents played with when they were still children. The toys included rocking horse, toy cars and soldiers, stuffed bears, spinning tops, etc. Grade 1s found similarities between the toys and games played then and now. We went further by checking how then the toys before are different from today. The following discoveries came out: materials used, designs, how they are made and safety. Toys before were mostly made of wood and metals. Now most toys are made of plastic. Toys before have basic designs and colours. Toys now have more interesting designs and vibrant colours. Toys before were not as safe as the toys now because the toys now undergo a stricter process of safety check.
After that, we looked at dance and music and how they have changed overtime from 1950s to present. The students worked in pairs and chose a song for their dance. They are going to come up with steps and showcase this during our school assembly.
